Surviving Winter in Northern Sweden

What does daily life actually look like during winter in Northern Sweden? Not the Instagram version. Not the dreamy “Scandinavian aesthetic” version. The real version — with over a meter of snow, freezing temperatures, and a driveway that doesn’t clear itself.

In my latest video, I take you through a full snow-filled day here in the north — clearing more than one meter of snow from our driveway and walkway, showing the physical effort required, and sharing what winter life abroad truly feels like.

If you’re considering moving to Sweden, leaving the US for Europe, or just curious about life in extreme winter climates, here’s what this season really demands — and what it gives back.

Clearing 1 Meter of Snow Is Just… Tuesday

When people imagine life in Scandinavia, they think cozy cabins and soft falling snow. What they don’t picture is waking up to a wall of snow blocking the driveway.

In the video, I show the reality of clearing more than a meter of snow after a heavy snowfall. This isn’t light powder — it’s dense, wet, and physically demanding. Snow removal becomes part of your routine, not an occasional inconvenience.

To survive winter in Northern Sweden, you need:

  • A heavy-duty snow shovel or snow pusher
  • Proper winter boots with grip
  • Insulated gloves and layered clothing
  • Patience and time

There’s no rushing through it. Snow removal takes effort, especially if you own a home. It’s one of the biggest adjustments for Americans moving here — you are responsible for maintaining your property year-round, including in Arctic conditions.

What Winter Is REALLY Like in Northern Sweden

Winter here is long. It’s dark. It’s cold. And it’s beautiful.

Temperatures drop well below freezing. Daylight becomes limited. But something surprising happens — you adapt.

Life doesn’t stop. People still go to work. Kids still play outside. Roads are plowed efficiently. The country is built for this climate. The key difference? You learn to prepare instead of complain.

That’s one of the biggest mindset shifts when moving abroad — especially from the US to Europe. In Northern Sweden, winter isn’t treated like an emergency. It’s treated like a season.

The Tools and Effort Behind “Snow Life”

Surviving heavy snowfall isn’t just about physical strength — it’s about having the right systems in place.

In the video, I show the tools and the process behind clearing the driveway and walkway. It’s repetitive, sometimes exhausting, but oddly satisfying. There’s something grounding about working with the elements rather than fighting them.

You begin to understand that living in Northern Europe requires resilience. And that resilience builds confidence.

It’s also a reminder: when you move abroad, the lifestyle changes more than you expect. Climate affects everything — your schedule, your meals, your energy levels, even your social life.

From Arctic Effort to Cozy Evenings

After battling heavy snow, there’s nothing better than stepping inside to warmth.

One of my favorite parts of winter here is the contrast between harsh outdoor conditions and cozy indoor living. In this video, I share a simple winter dinner: cabbage and vegan roast. Nothing fancy — just hearty, warming food that fits the season.

This is the side of Scandinavian winter people don’t talk about enough. The stillness. The quiet. The intentional slow pace. Candles lit. Warm meals. Early evenings.

Winter forces you to slow down — and that’s not always a bad thing.

Thinking About Moving to Sweden or Europe?

If you’re an American considering moving to Europe, videos like this are meant to give you the honest version of life abroad. Not the vacation version — the daily reality.

Snow removal. Dark months. Cultural adjustments. Self-reliance.

But also:

Peace. Nature. Simplicity. A different rhythm of life.

If you’re serious about relocating overseas — especially buying property abroad — preparation is everything.

That’s exactly why I created my Buying Homes Abroad Guide, a step-by-step resource to help Americans navigate purchasing property and starting over in Europe. It covers practical logistics, mindset shifts, and what no one tells you about relocating internationally.
