Moving to a new country always comes with surprises—but living in Sweden as an American has been an experience that’s exceeded my expectations in ways I didn’t anticipate.

After spending the past four months here in Northern Sweden, I’ve had enough time to move beyond the “newness” and start experiencing what everyday life is really like. And honestly, there are several things I’ve come to genuinely love about living here.

If you’re considering moving to Sweden, planning a visit, or just curious about what life is like from an American perspective, here are some of the biggest positives I’ve experienced so far.

Nature Is Part of Everyday Life

One of the first things that stood out to me is how accessible nature is in Sweden. No matter where you are, you’re never far from forests, lakes, or open landscapes.

Unlike in the U.S., where outdoor experiences often require planning or travel, nature in Sweden feels fully integrated into daily life. This is largely thanks to a concept known as “freedom to roam,” which allows people to explore natural spaces with very few restrictions.

For me—and especially with three dogs—this has been a huge lifestyle upgrade. Being able to step outside and immediately be surrounded by peaceful, natural environments is something I don’t take for granted.

A Slower, More Balanced Lifestyle

Another major difference I’ve noticed is the pace of life. Living in Sweden feels calmer and more balanced compared to what I was used to in the U.S.

There’s less emphasis on constant productivity and more focus on quality of life. People take time to relax, spend time with family, and enjoy their surroundings. It’s not about doing more—it’s about living better.

This shift in mindset has had a noticeable impact on my day-to-day experience. It’s something I didn’t fully realize I needed until I experienced it firsthand.

The Cold Is More Manageable Than Expected

Before moving, one of my biggest concerns was the weather. Northern Sweden is known for its long, cold winters, and I wasn’t sure how difficult that adjustment would be.

Surprisingly, it hasn’t been nearly as bad as I expected.

The key difference is that everything here is built for the climate. Homes are well-insulated and comfortable, public spaces are heated, and people are simply prepared. Once you adapt your mindset—and your wardrobe—the cold becomes much easier to handle.

Fika Culture: More Than Just Coffee

Sweden’s famous “fika” culture is another aspect of daily life that I’ve really come to appreciate.

While it may sound like just a coffee break, fika is actually about slowing down and being present. It’s a moment to pause, connect with others, or simply enjoy a quiet break in your day.

This cultural habit reinforces the overall sense of balance that defines life in Sweden.

Food Quality and Simplicity

One of the biggest reasons I chose to move to Sweden—and something that has stood out even more since arriving—is the quality of food.

Compared to the U.S., food in Sweden tends to feel less processed and more natural. Ingredient lists are often simpler, and many of the additives commonly found in American foods are more strictly regulated or not used at all.

This difference is noticeable not only in how food tastes, but also in how it makes you feel. Meals feel lighter and more straightforward, without the heaviness that often comes with highly processed options.

Even basic items like bread and dairy products seem to prioritize quality over complexity. It’s a subtle shift, but one that has had a meaningful impact on my daily life.

A Dog-Friendly Environment

As someone who moved here with three dogs, I’ve also been impressed by how dog-friendly Sweden is.

There’s plenty of space, access to nature, and an overall positive attitude toward pets. It feels like dogs are naturally integrated into daily life rather than being restricted.

This has made the transition much easier and more enjoyable—not just for me, but for them as well.

🇸🇪 A Sense of Calm and Stability

If I had to summarize what I love most about living in Sweden, it would be the overall sense of calm.

Life here feels less chaotic and more structured in a way that reduces stress. There’s a level of stability and predictability that makes everyday life feel easier to navigate.

While no place is perfect, this aspect of Swedish life has been one of the most valuable changes for me.
